    Notes:

There were several lines of our Emmerts in colonial history . The Emmerick, Emerts or Emmerts, as they were called, ca me from a distinguished ancestry dating back to the Crusade s in medieval history when one Emerick, a German knight, be came a distinguished Crusader to the Holy Land. Several o f the Emmerts were German knights and had a Coat of Arms ma de to pertetuate the family title. In one of the great ar t galleries of New York City there isstill to be found a Co at of arms bearing the proud title, Von Emmert. This Coa t of Arms was brought to the hudson Valley by the Dutch set tlers.
The Descendants of the famous Von Emmert were merchant s of the middle class. They were very pious and religiou s folk, belonging either to the Dutch Reformed or Luthera n Protestants. They played a conspicuous role in our early , as well as later, colonial history.
The early records showed several groups of Emmerts arr ived in the colonies at different times. This sketch is co ncerned more particularly with the direct ancestry of Joh n Leonard Emmert, the Dunker pathfinder in Maryland history , and is limited to his line.

John Michael Emmert and Mitchell Emmert, ages 39 and 4 2 respectively, left Germany in 1732 and sailed to Americ a on the ship, Loyal Judith, landing in the port of Philade lphia. The Neckar originates in the Black Forest, flows through Stuttgart and Heidelberg, and joins the Rhine at Mannheim. We were told in Neckarelz that a common way for people to start their journey to America was by traveling down the rivers using rafts and then selling the wood when they got to the sea. Hence, it could have been that Johann Phillip floated a raft down the Neckar to the Rhine and then down the Rhine to Rotterdam, where he is known to have boarded a ship bound for Philadelphia.
